| A majority of Campbell University College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences (CPHS) donors and alumni make their contributions through annual gifts. These gifts are the foundation of all support at the school and impact almost every program and more importantly the most current need. Gifts by currency, credit or personal check immediately benefit the Institution and are the easiest and most direct way to give, but pledges can also be made in support of the pharmacy school. The majority of gifts are made by mail, phone or our on-line giving form. Each year phone calls and mail are distributed in an effort to reach all of our alumni, parents and friends. These contacts are made to allow our alumni, parents and friends the opportunity to improve the quality of education provided by our school. The phone calls and direct mail pieces also help us update our records; communicate new initiatives or exciting programs; and answer any questions that our alumni, parents or friends might have. [back] | | Endowed gifts to Campbell University CPHS provide sustained support. Endowed funds are established for a variety of purposes determined by the donor — to provide scholarships for students, to advance breakthrough research, to honor distinguished faculty or alumni, to memorialize loved ones, or to simply thank Campbell University for the educational value it provided. Below are some frequently asked questions about endowments. What is an endowment? An endowment is a gift made to Campbell University CPHS to be held in perpetuity. This means that the gift is invested, and only a portion of its average annual earnings is used for purposes specified by the donor. The remaining investment return is added back to the principle to offset inflation. How are endowments managed? The endowment investment policy of Campbell University CPHS has a dual goal of preserving the purchasing power of the assets throughout time and providing a stable flow of funds to meet distribution commitments. This, in turn, will allow future students to benefit from the endowment at the same level as a current student. What types of endowments exist? To ensure that an endowment produces sufficient funds in support of a particular area designated by the donor, both now and in the future, minimum monetary support levels have been established. Faculty Chairs or Professorships (starting at $750,000) An endowed faculty chair or professorship provides resource funds that distinguish a faculty member’s work, reward achievement in the academic world and enable the professor to pursue new areas of research or innovative teaching methods. This type of endowment allows our school to attract and retain the finest scholars. Endowed Scholarships (starting at $25,000) Scholarships enable CPHS to provide educational opportunities to many talented and deserving students. Endowed scholarships may be named in honor or memory of someone. Donors may determine the criteria for how the scholarship funds will be awarded whether it is based on financial need, academic standing, and/or community activities. Operating Fund Discretionary funds earmarked for a particular department or program will enable that area of the school to respond to unexpected opportunities and provides a significant level of flexibility to the designated area’s programs. Can an endowed gift be funded over a period of time? Endowed gifts can be created up to a five-year period with the ultimate goal of reaching the minimum level for that particular type of endowment. For instance, it takes $25,000 minimum to endow a scholarship. A donor may opt to pay $5,000 each year for five years to reach the scholarship endowment level. Once the minimum level is reached, additional contributions may be made at any time. However, if you are interested in awarding a $1,000 scholarship annually, and you want the first scholarship give to begin in the current year, you will need to make a $6,000 annual contribution ($5,000 toward the endowment; and $1,000 for the scholarship) until the endowment has matured (after five years)—this is sometimes called a converted endowment. [back] | | Non-cash gifts may be securities, personal property, real estate or gifts-in-kind. Securities include stocks, bonds and mutual funds. The value of the gift is determined on the day Campbell University receives the security and is calculated by finding the mean of the highest and lowest selling price for the day. Gifts of personal property include art objects, rare books, coin collections and other treasured items. While giving our school these gifts allows you to enjoy tax benefits, it also ensures that others will learn and benefit from having the gifts on campus. Gifting personal property, which can be utilized in a related use, may entitle you to a tax deduction equal to the gift's fair market value. If the gift is made through a will, the estate will benefit from the tax savings. Gifts of real estate include personal residences, farms, vacation homes or timberland. To ensure maximum tax advantage for you as well as the marketability of the gift, the property is carefully appraised and assessed. The value of your gift is based on an independent, qualified appraisal provided by you, the donor. Gifts-in-kind are typically equipment or other items such as computers or software, which can be used in the ordinary course of university business, in the classroom or in research facilities.
